User Research in Portugal

Key Points about the Portuguese Market

Languages research can be conducted in:

Portuguese and in some instances English.

Challenges for recruitment of research participants:

It is convenient to avoid testing on Monday mornings, Friday afternoons and vacation seasons (August and Christmas).

Do not set fieldwork or test sessions without checking bank holidays because some are only celebrated regionally, which might affect the recruitment.

If recruiting people from a database, make sure there are extra participants as there might be dropouts.

Cultural pitfalls and solutions, how to’s, typical response behaviour:

If the Think Aloud methodology is applied participants should be reminded to share their thoughts.

Give 30 minutes intervals between 2 participants during testing.

Typical response behaviour and how to deal with it:

Portuguese people can be a bit shy, so make sure to tell them how important it is to give their honest opinion, even if it is a negative one.

Also make sure to emphasize it is not their abilities that are being tested, but the product or website.
